Ever wanted to be at the Tour De France? the sights, the sounds, the noise, the views, the food? In it's own way television can at least get you part of the way there. You can see the riders, choose which Chateau you'd like to live in and marvel at the breathtaking scenery....but your lacking the full experience, you don't have the food.
We're not talking the food the riders are existing on, energy gels, electrolyte drinks etc we're talking the real deal. The foods of the towns, regions and countries of the Tour.

So we present you with the Tour De France* in food. Every stage a specialty of the town or region has been selected for your pleasure complete with recipes, enjoy the tour in all it's glory.

Stage 1    Individual time-trial     Saturday 4 July     Monaco > Monaco

Start the tour with a treat of the rich and famous the Barbagiuan a small pastry containing pumpkin and herbs. Recipe

Stage 2    Flat     Sunday 5 July     Monaco > Brignoles

Soupe au pistou is a traditional Provencal soup, serve with some crusty bread. Recipe

Stage 3    Flat    Monday 6 July     Marseille > La Grande-Motte

The delicious Aioli was invented in this region. Recipe Try some with traditional French Fries. Recipe. For those wanting an after dinner drink try Pastis.

Stage 4    Team TT     Tuesday 7 July     Montpellier > Montpellier

Cheer your team on with a plate of goats milk cheese and olives in a tapas style.

Stage 5    Flat    Wednesday 8 July     Le Cap d’Agde > Perpignan

Get ready for Spain with Escalivada a Catalan salad. Recipe

Stage 6    Flat    Thursday 9 July     Gérone > Barcelone

Celebrate crossing the border with some Spanish food such as Coca also known as Spanish pizza. Recipe. For drinks try a Barcelona Hot Chocolate. Recipe.

Stage 7    High Mountains     Friday 10 July     Barcelone > Andorre Arcalis

Still in Spain try a local favourite - pa amb tomaquet  - a large slice of fresh country bread (toasted or not) rubbed with tomato and drizzled with virgin olive oil. It may be topped with Iberian ham, cheese and anchovies or served along with meat, chicken or fish "a la brasa" (cooked over a charcoal fire).

In the Pyrenees the only choice is Roquefort cheese, try slathered on crusty bread or water crackers.

A speciality of the area is fruits tapés fruits ground into a paste and dried to create chewy treats, Just like a fruit roll up. Recipe

With it's own brand of water it seems only right to drink Vittel on this stage.

Region known for pastries and chocolate so grab a selection from your local patisserie and enjoy with some nice wine.

Annecy is famous for it's sweet treats especially the Valrhona chocolate and Nougat de Montelimar( White nougat made with sugar, honey, white of egg, vanilla, almonds, pistachio nuts or crystallized fruit).Nougat recipe.

Stage 19    Flat    Friday 24 July     Bourgoin-Jallieu > Aubenas

This region gave us the iconic macaroon. You can try this recipe or cheat and get some from your local baker.

Stage 20    High Mountains     Saturday 25 July     Montélimar > Mont Ventoux

The famous climb has inspired a cheese created in it's likeness - Mont Ventoux  as well as a stew. So take your pick and enjoy what is sure to be an epic cycling battle on this stage. Recipe
